Skin Deep
Published in Paperback by Pinnacle Books (September, 1990)
Author: Carol Davis Luce
Average review score:

Skin Deep is a Thrill Ride
A thrilling ride that delves into the lives of beauty pageant contestants. Twenty years ago, a beauty pageant winner is attacked with acid. Now the contestants have separate lives yet still live in the same area. One of the former contestants has a TV show and invites them for a reunion on her program. All hell breaks loose and the attacks resume.

The story delves into the lives of the contestants and what happened to them later in life as the mystery unfolds. Carol masterfully drops little clues that lead you in several different directions trying to discover who the bad person is. Is it Corinne, the beauty pageant winner who is horribly scarred with acid? Is it John, the mysterious writer that has a past with Corinne? Mixed with some pretty steamy scenes, the story slowly unravels the mystery and reveals an unexpected culprit.

I highly recommend seeking this novel out. It is well worth the effort.

Another great pageturner from the pen of Carol Davis Luce.
SKIN DEEP is a terrific blend of mystery, suspense, horror, and romance. This is one of those rare books that was, for me, quite literally impossible to put down! It's a book that men and women can enjoy.

Be sure to read Ms. Luce's other fine novels, NIGHT STALKER, NIGHT PREY, NIGHT PASSAGE, and NIGHT GAMES.

Looking For A Groovy Beach Book?
Summer is already here in Florida. Put away the Bukowski, Fitzgerald, Stryon and pull out the cheesy thrillers perfect for the beach. Chills and thrills are my summer game as long as it's not a tale about a lonely rich (young) and beautiful widow who falls in love with her handyman. This one had "beachy" stamped on the cover and I bought it. I was more than pleasantly surprised. In the world of paperback thrillers, it was a page turner with plenty of twists and a great insight into the grown up lives of former beauty queens. It's not one of the classics, but a better than average summer read about a killer stalking four former pageant winners. It's fun - read it!

Read it now!
This book is an excellent dissection of Al Davis and the stunts he pulls throughout his life and with the NFL. His battles with Pete Rozelle and the league are not much smaller than battles in a World War. From coaching at the Citadel to moving his Raiders from Oakland to Los Angeles. It goes through Al's boyhood life and his struggles to the top of the game with the Raiders. This is an excellent book, not only for Raiders fans but any fan of sports.

Great book on THE Man.

From the author -- Thank you!
I'm glad to see the appreciation expressed here. It means so much to someone who's trying to break in. Feel free to contact me with any feedback -- MrGForce@home.com.

Really Cool!
My Mom bought the book and left it laying around. The back cover write up sounded like the books I like to read, so I gave it a try. I like spooky and weird stuff, books and TV shows. Hey, it really was different. I told my friend about it and I think he's gonna get me a copy for my birthday coming up. Hope so. Does the writer have any more books like that out?

Great!
The name of the transit line: Spiritual-Material Afterlife Rapid Transit (SMART)... creative! The author offers an interesting theory and creation of an intermediary place for souls on their way to their final destination according to an evaluation of the life they lived.

Speak No Evil
Published in Hardcover by Regnery Publishing, Inc. (October, 1998)
Authors: Gary Aldrich and Mark Davis
Average review score:

A good solid read!
A very wise person once defined genius as being not what youknow as much as knowing where to look. Mr Aldrich and Mr. Davis have woven a tale that could have easily been a front page story in any major American newspaper. Or maybe it already has. The only too real setting of this novel is the strange world of politicians that have either lost it all or have gained so much that even the truth is a minor detail. Joseph P. DeVine is a former FBI agent working as a consultant investigating the strange death of a political information gatherer know as "Dr. Dirt". And on his tail, Anne Carlson, a reporter for the L.A. Times. Speak no Evil introduces the reader to a collection of ruined politicos, powerfull politically connected families, a former Soviet spetznaz turned assassin, Dmitri Popova. And a unhuggable slimeball named Lindstrom. From the Oval Office in the White House to the brothels in Surabaya, Indonesia, a string of shady land deals, pay-offs, corruption and a bastard child. This novel becomes a little too real at times. The story is loosely based on the experiences and knowledge gained by Mr, Aldrich from many years working for the F.B.I. And his assignement to protecting "the current residents" of the White House. An unnerving insight into what might be, what can be, and what is. Just a note...It might be best to think of "Cyclops" as just a monster in an old Sinbad movie, if you think it would help.

A political thriller for the 90s--it's got it all.
"Speak No Evil" is a behind-the-scenes look at the way vicious Washington games are played. After the macabre murder in the first chapter, "whodunnit" meets "whydunnit"--and all the players seem to be drawn (are they real?) from Washington figures on the current scene. It makes you wonder.

It's a compelling read for mystery fans, political junkies and anybody who enjoys a book that will keep you guessing. I loved it.

'Speak No Evil' .... fiction?
Davis and Adrich either concoct or expose for the public, a high-powered, high-tech political dirt digging operation. Their backgrounds suggest the latter. While 'Speak No Evil' is "fiction", the amount of facts and truths as they relate to the present-day political scene leave you wondering where fact ends and fiction takes over! Education or fantasy? This powerful murder-mystery, political thriller is alive and fast-paced from cover to cover.

Taken by Design: Photographs from the Institute of Design, 1937-1971

A fascinating sidebar in the history of American photography
The collaborative editorial effort of David Travis, Elizabeth Siegel, Keith F. Davis, Taken By Design: Photographs From The Institute Of Design, 1937-1971 is the Art Institute of Chicago exhibition catalog which was a jointly published project with the University of Chicago Press. Showcasing the photography that arose out of The Institute of Design during some three and a half decades, Taken By Design chronicles and documents a fascinating sidebar in the history of American photography. Enhanced with essays, articles, biographical sketches, course curricula, and more, Taken By Design is a welcome, original, and highly recommended contribution to personal, professional, and academic Photography historical reference and resource collections and reading lists.

Much more than a catalog
Much more than a catalog

This book is not just a catalog of the show now at San Francisco's MOMA. It is a rich source that chronicles the evolution of the Chicago Institute of Design (ID) and its photography program. With 6 written essays and articles, biographies, course curricula, and other background it places the ID's photographers rightfully in the middle of the late twentieth century art revolution.

The writing is authoritative, revealing and thought provoking. Some is understandably enthusiastic, by authors named Moholy-Nagy and Siegel, some is analytical/critical, illuminating the difficulties and disagreements that resolved themselves into a program like no other. Any student of photography or modern art must know about this controversial and audacious adventure that was spun off from the Bauhaus by Moholy-Nagy, Arthur Siegel and the other subjects of this chronicle.

The authors explore some of these subjects. Why was the this such an important project and why was it controversial? What effect has it had? What does it teach us today? These are important questions simply because a large number of prominent and influential students passed through it.

No serious collection of late 20th century photographs can be without 20 or so of the prints from this group. Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, Ken Josephson, Ray Metzker, Linda Connor, Arthur Siegel, Art Sinsabaugh and many others all studied and taught there. Many went on the teach at places like R.I. School of Design, San Francisco Art Institute and many places in between. The influence of this group is much more extensive than its size and longevity would suggest.

At a time when the "giants" of the medium were devoted to "pure" photography, Moholy-Nagy appeared from Europe and proposed that photography be treated as a tool of graphic design. Light, texture, volume, rhythm, contrast and other elements were worth studying for their own sake in order to apply the unique strengths of photography to the art of design.

They produced something akin to Jazz. Painters like Motherwell, Johns, Rauschenberg were producing strikingly similar imagery. Paul Strand, Man Ray, Lartigue, Rodschenko and a many others had explored the same issues. The Bauhaus and the Chicago ID were an attempt to formalize the earlier experiments. Strand, Weegee, Winogrand, Blumenfeld and others contributed to the ID at various times.

The ID photographers showed how purely graphic aspects of the medium could be used to express a vision, used to dig subtle meaning from the mundane, used to reveal things in synthetic abstract that weren't visible. They expanded and elevated their medium in a very short, intense time. There is little in today's published graphics not already in the photographs of the students in this show.

An unintended consequence of this book is to have produced a key to much of abstract expressionist painting, and modern poetry. The photograph always contains an insistent link to "reality" that seems more obvious than it is in a painting, but it is no less a subject of the painter than the photographer. This show might be the trigger that makes other modern artists accessible to some people. I've recommended this book to some art teachers for this reason.

A LEGENDARY TIME....
I have long been a fan of the work that came out of the Institute of Design from the 1940s-1960s. It was a highly creative and experimental time and environment. After fleeing Nazi Germany in the late 1930s, many Bauhaus design and photography educators set up shop in Chicago. They started a new school and a new method of teaching photography that emphasized experimenting with abtract forms and understanding the process of imagery through intense creative study. Lazlo Moholy-Nagy was the driving force for the early successes, along with Gyorgy Kepes and Nathan Lerner. After Maholy-Nagy died, Harry Callahan took over the job as photography head, and moved away slightly from the early experimentation period by trying to challenge his students into creating their own thesis statements. Some of the other artists that also attended or participated in this important school were Barbara Crane, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Joseph Jachna, Kenneth Josephson, Arthur Siegel, & many others.

The book in in conjunction with the exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago of the same title. The exhibition should not be missed if you are in the Chicago area, but if you cannot make it to the exhibition (which closes May 12, 2002), this book is a great representation of the exhibits masterpieces. Inside are hundreds of fine-art images from ID, along with interviews, quotes, in-depth commentaries, and a lot of really great candids of the artists. It is really worth it. And I would certainly suggest buying this book at Amazon...

If you have any interest in modern art or photography, this book is a fantastic history lesson on the impact of these innovators on the entire possibilities of the medium. The Institute of Design helped shape photography into an art form of its own, and to push the boundaries of the medium at the same time. What a great time it must have been!

Teach Yourself Cloth Dollmaking: Simple Techniques and Patterns for Dolls and Doll Clothes (Teach Yourself Series)
Published in Paperback by Friedman/Fairfax Publishing (May, 1995)
Authors: Jodie Davis and Bill Milne
Average review score:

Great Beginner Dollmaking Book!
I love this book! I am a beginner sewer and dollmaker and I found this book to be easy to follow and understand. I can't stop making the adorable pocket dolls Jodie teaches in this book. TEACH YOURSELF CLOTH DOLLMAKING has a lot of cute little dolls, in color, featured throughout the whole book, created by different students and readers who used Jodie's patterns. It is fun and inspirational to see the many different kinds of dolls created from the same pattern. What I like most about the book is how the reader/dollmaker can create their own individual doll with it's own little personality. If you are new to dollmaking like I am I highly recommend this book! Easy to follow and easy to do!

A wonderful place to start making dolls!
This book is a wonderful place to start to learn how to make soft dolls. The patterns and instructions are well written and easy to follow. After following the author's patterns, new ideas were easy to incorporate. I have made angels and dolls for all of my family. Every Christmas, an angel inspired by this book looks down from eight different trees. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to start making cloth dolls.

Fabulous for beginners
This book is a godsend to those who want to learn about cloth dollmaking. Each step of making a doll, from basic sewing, to making the face or hair, to choosing fabrics and making clothing is covered in great detail. There are also patterns included for several dolls, each slightly more advanced than the one before it. The patterns cover several types of dolls - simple pancake dolls, a baby and 2 toddler dolls, and fantasy type dolls. It's definitely worth owning, even if you are an experienced dollmaker

The Tenth Garfield Treasury (Garfield Treasury, 10th)
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (October, 1999)
Authors: Jim Davis and Nicole Sprinkle
Average review score:

Behind The First, Garfield's Most Pleasing Treasury.
I was very happy when I purchased the First Garfield Treasury. I was equally pleased when I picked up The Second Garfield Treasury. I loved the idea of Garfield's hilarious Sunday comics released as they had originally been seen in newspapers, in living color. However, at about The Third Garfield Treasury, the logos (which were just coming into the strip) were cut, as well as the very first square in the strip. For example, in the strip where Jon and Odie were going to sneak and surprise Garfield on his birthday, the picture of Jon going sssshhh to Odie was cut out. The rest of the Treasuries went the same way, and I was dissipointed, although I still bought them (color!).

When I saw The Tenth Garfield Treasury at the book star, I was expecting more of the same in terms of the logos and such. No. I was very pleased to buy this book. The logos are there, as well as the first little square. The color is great, and easily show off how much the graphics have improved. The book is well desighned. Garfield's jokes are still very funny, and since the strips are from his latest (and funnier) books, Garfield Throws His Wieght Around, Garfield Life To The Fullest, and Garfield Feeds The Kitty, all Garfield fans will be howling as they read it. It's re-read value is off the charts. I've read this book more than twenty times and I still laugh my head off each time.

Jim Davis is a very talented cartoonist to be able to keep Garfield alive for more then twenty-four years. Garfield is always cute, and very rarely are his strips flat or un-funny (which was the specialty of Peanuts).

Bottom line: The Tenth Garfield Treasury is a must buy for all fans of Garfield or someone who just needs to laugh or kick off a depression. Highley recommended.

Great collection of sunday comics!
This treasury has very vibrant color, is smart and funny and falls in line with all the other great Garfield comics. It is amazing how Jim Davis can think up new and great comics after all these years!

Better than the other Treasuries
This book has way better graphics than the other treasuries. It also has the logo box and the joke-like first box at the beginning. It even has a great cover. Great book!

Thoughts & Feelings: Taking Control of Your Moods and Your Life
Published in Paperback by New Harbinger Pubns (January, 1998)
Authors: Martha, Ph.D. Davis, Patrick Fanning, and Matthew, Ph.D. McKay
Average review score:

First Class Book on Cognitive Behavior Therapy--
A while back, I was doing extensive research before writing up a discussion on the use of cognitive behavioral therapy. I went to the original texts by Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck, and they were great for theoretical info, but this book was THE BEST for simple, easy to understand discussion of how to use the principles and techniques of cognitive behavioral therapies to help control anxiety, depression, self esteem, moods and other aspects of your life. It provides short, simple explanations and well thought through exercises you can use to take great charge of your life.

It is an excellent book for therapists who want to have a quick referral resource for patients and it is a super self help book.

Like the authors say, it is not a replacement for treatment by a doctor, but it sure goes a long way for helping some basic issues. I've used the techniques listed here along with biofeedback interventions (see more about them and how to read articles I've written on my website listed in my profile)

Bottom line-- for self help in cognitive therapy, consider this the layman's bible, and an essential bibliotherapy resource for therapists..

REAL Self-help!
I began using this book in conjunction with a therapist and did quite well. When my therapy ended, I bought my own copy, since one can use this book alone, as well. Simple and clearly understandable, I found the book an immense help.

While for some problems the authors do NOT recommend using the book without a trained therapist, for many with more easily treated problems it is a wonderful program of self-help.

I used the book for cognitive behavioral therapy for depression and it was most effective.

Useful and well done self help book
Starting with the premise that our thoughts create our feelings, the authors offer lots of ways to learn to listen to what our thoughts are telling us. They explain the techniques used in cognitive therapy and give practical steps for improving your life. I've used this book myself to help me get through some bad times, and given copies to several friends. I used to buy the self help books for a big library so I've seen a lot of them; this is probably my favorite for all around usefulness.

Treason in America
Published in Paperback by Acacia Press, Inc. (1998)
Author: Anton Chaitkin
Average review score:

Amazing eye opener, top 5 must read
Anton Chaitkin was persecuted for releasing the most in depth research on the traitors to America throughout it's existance. Anton Chaitkin also uncovered the document from the library of congress proving that Bush Sr's father, Presscott Bushes bank "Union Bank" was shut down by Roosevelt in 1942, under the trading with the pact for funding the Nazi party and Thyssin Steel money. Fritz Thyssin wrote the book "I funded Hitler" and was responsible for more than 50% of the war drive steel and iron. Democratic Presidental Candidate Lyndon LaRouche has exposed these impierail traitors to the ideas of the American Revolution the the civil rights movement. It is time we Americans got off our high and holy degenerate [behinds] and acted in the spirits of Ben Franklin, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Aberham Lincoln, McKinley, and FDR.

Excellent Updating of the real history of the U.S. republic
This book has to be one of the most important books that any media scientist could possibly read. It is pure art in the sense of art as an updater of consciousness.Wonderful book.

Fantantastic!
You can study American History in High School or College, but you will never get the in depth research involved in this book. I have never seen such a great list of referances andbibliography. Why haven't more historians been able to just tell it like it is instead of just sucking up to New World Order Crazies? How many people have ever heard of the "American System of Economics" as opposed to the British East India "Free Trade Buy cheap,Sell dear slavocracy. If you really want to know your history, Read this book and study its' referances.

TROUBLE DOLLS PROVES NOT TROUBLING TO READ!
TROUBLE DOLLS by JIMMY BUFFETT and SAVANNAH JANE BUFFETT is a really great story! It has many elements within it that are similar to the life of JIMMY BUFFETT, which PARROTHEADS will be sure to notice. The imagination runs wild in reading TROUBLE DOLLS! Mental pictures of the Florida Keys and longing for them are results of reading this book. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, too! I highly recommend this book to people of all ages - PARROTHEADS . . . lovers of the tropics . . . children . . . adults that need a getaway for just a few minutes. The book is great! Find out for yourself!

HE writes like he sings
I read this book and JOLLY MON to my fourth and fifth grade students. They LOVED it and wanted to know if he had written any more books. The story is sweet and my students were impressed with Lizzie's courage and sailing ability.

great children's book
This is a great book for kids. Lizzie being able to handle her own problems makes it very empowering to children...especially girls!
